Siding Nightmare

Jeremy and I have planned on siding the house since we bought it. We feel like if we tried, we could probably side it ourselves, and have pretty much got it in our minds that we don't want to pay someone else to do it. We've had plenty of friends volunteer to help us when the time comes who have at least some experience in siding, so we feel like tackling the project shouldn't be too hard. (So it usually goes, right?)

We priced some siding earlier this week and got a rough idea as to what it could possibly cost us. Menards is offering 11% back on all purchases this week, so we're really considering trying to buy right now. One would think that the hardest decision would be color (which isn't the easiest decision, let me tell you!) but planning WHEN to buy seems to be the tough part for us. We also will be buying new gutters and such too.

It's super stressful to try and make a decision like this. Buying right now could potentially save us a few hundred dollars, which would be wonderful, but we also feel rushed and uncertain under the time crunch. We're really, really, really hoping that the money we got back from our tax returns will cover all the costs and we'll still have a bit left over but we're not sure. It seems like everyone has something different and some other price to tack on to what we thought was a final price. Has anyone else ever tackled a siding project? Any tips or tricks to make it easier?

Wish us luck in this adventure! I'm pretty sure we're really going to need it!

  1. I HATE that feeling. You always wanna buy now and save, but then if you don't NEED it right now, is it worth it? Unfortunately we've never done anything with siding so I can't help you out friend!

    1. That's the exact feeling! We're obviously not going to be able to put it up until it gets warmer (which apparently Ohio has decided is NEVER going to happen) and we'll have to store it and everything else if we buy it too. Blah!

  2. I completely understand! Big projects like this are always so stressful. My advice would be to take advantage of the cheaper price and you can always wait a bit to do it. :)

    1. So true! We've just got to get our butt in gear to buy it now!

  3. Sadly, we don't own our home. But, even the littlest projects that need to be done around the house bring on stress (not to this magnitude). Sorry I can't help in this department. :(

  4. I feel your pain on your dilemma. And I hate house projects. And I hate wondering if I should buy something now and save and then get around to using it later. I've found I have had bad luck with that myself. I always think it will be a great idea to save some money but then something better comes along or I end up making a poor decision that I can't go back on or something. That's just me though......and part of my personality is fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants so I really have no business planning for anything anyway :))) You will make a great decision!!

  5. Thanks Sally! We make a lot of fly-by-the-seat decisions too! Haha!

  6. Saving the money by buying it now could help if you need the extra cash later to pay someone to do it if you and J aren't able to do it yourselves. I know that Dad has always said siding can be tricky but if you take your time and can pay close attention to the details of the job, you shouldn't have any problems.

  7. Now that I’ve thought about it, yeah, WHEN is also a tough question to answer. With discount offers, which unfortunately don’t coordinate well with your own timeline, it really is a nightmare. One good thing though is that it is your property, and you can make necessary adjustments depending on your priority project. Jesse@Jon Wright Industries
