He's been waking up completely dry after sleeping all night and at nap times, so we started our morning first thing on the potty. He went first thing and was so excited to flush it down and rinse out the bowl. About 45 minutes later we tried again and he went again. I was so proud of him and so happy that we had such a great start. The rest of the day was challenging. I managed to get him to go twice more before nap time with two accidents. He never once told me he had to go, but I started to pick up on a few little ques that told me he needed to. I put a diaper on him for a nap and he immediately filled it with number 2, I think he was holding it. After his nap, he woke up dry once again. I put him on the potty and he didn't go. I let him run around naked for about 15 minutes and then I put him on it again, and again, he didn't go. I put his underwear on him and he helped me start dinner. I noticed he was squirming quite a bit so I put him on the potty and STILL he wouldn't go! Five minutes later I noticed that his underwear were a little wet but not soaked. I changed him and put him back on the potty, again, no luck. Not even two minutes later I noticed that his new underwear were just a little wet again. It was frustrating because then dinner was done and it was time to eat. I put him on the potty, he didn't go, and threw a diaper on him so we could eat in peace. I think he is holding it and then just going enough to where the training pants aren't soaked and uncomfortable, but still wet.
I'm afraid this is going to be quite the challenge.
Tomorrow we are going to my grandmother's which is almost an hour drive. I'm hoping I can get him to go right before we leave, throw a towel in his car seat, and see how he does in the car. If he wets himself, maybe it will do him good to have to sit in it for a few minutes until I can stop and change him so he can really feel how uncomfortable it is. Who knows?!
Wish me luck as we embark on this journey! Does anyone have any tips or tricks to help the process along?
Good luck!!!! :) He looks so adorable.
ReplyDeleteGood Luck!! You can do this Henry!!
ReplyDeleteGood luck momma. Henry is a smart boy and he'll pick it up when he's ready. I never believed the whole 'overnight, it will just click' thing until it happened to us. We really didn't pressure Drew to potty train and it did just click for us. Jelly Beans are a GREAT bribing tool! :)
ReplyDeleteGood luck! Having never potty trained a child, I'm afraid I can't offer any advice. I do believe that it will happen when they are ready though. And I'm not against bribing in the slightest!
ReplyDeleteBoys typically potty train closer to 3 years of age. Know several people who have boys and none were trained before 2 1/2. It takes them longer to fully grasp the idea. If you do it too early it leads to a lot of frustration on your end since they simply do not understand yet. But as you said look for cues. Dry diapers when they wake up or nap, can verbalize to you and know the difference between pee/poo and know what a potty is. Letting them sit in wet underwear may work for some but I know for my son it absolutely did not. I had to be patient when HE was ready to be potty trained, not when I wanted him to. There is a potty train in 3 days method but I modified it. First teach him while his bottom half is naked-underwear comes way later! (They think its a different kind of diaper so they still pee in it!!) Seems to be working pretty well with mine. Set the timer in 20 min increments and make a game out of it. Rush to the potty every 20 mins and let him sit down to get the idea of it. I give a small reward if he just sits on the potty for a while (like a superhero sticker) and if he goes to the potty on his own before the next 20 min I give candy. Rewards, rewards rewards! This is the stage I am at with my son right now he is 2 1/2. Underwear is the next step when they understand to actually go to the potty when they need to. I'm having the worst time with this with mine. Keep him naked he goes to the potty perfectly, give him undies he pees on batman or spiderman everytime! Last step is teaching them to pee standing up. It's a very long process that's for sure. Be patient and do not force or rush him. Good luck
